Our Timeline & Process
When we first heard about the project in 2016, we tried to acknowledge different issues in our community to get inspiration. We began exploring the issue of sexual assault because of the overwhelming statistics in our area and our own personal investment. We quickly agreed that this was a problem in our community that this health and wellness problem was one we could work to diminish. Our solutions are raising awareness, a blog, self defense seminars, and a piece of wearable technology that alerts others in case of an emergency.
January and February were our planning months. We focused on developing our group’s image by making the logo and creating our social media pages, which were constantly updated throughout the year. Also, we started designing thumbnail sketches for the potential design for the wristlet. We wanted to advertise our project and raise awareness through a health and wellness fair fair so we began planning a fair and contacting well-known organizations to partner with. In late February, we began martial arts training from MSW Marial Arts (Moo Sool Won) to prepare for our self defense seminars.
Our health and wellness fair came to fruition with the help of the Susan G. Women Organization. In March we held a booth at the Susan G. Komen’s Race for the Cure at Dodgers Stadium. We taught self defense moves and raised awareness about sexual assault, the importance of STEM, and our Wellness Wristlet. Later in the month we also held our first self defense seminar at our school. After a short presentation on sexual assault and the Wellness Wristlet, we taught self defense to female students. Lastly, this month was dedicated to constructing the Wellness Wristlet using Arduino products.
April has been busier than ever. We have been constantly updating our website and blog with our social media and pictures from our events. We have planned two larger, more community based self defense seminars. For the wristlet, we ordered more products to give for more functions and have been working on the coding. Finally, we were thrilled to be invited to present our project and the Wellness Wristlet at TedxYouth@Woodland Hills on May 20th.
